Peace House Showa - Hostel

I liked the old Japanese house, with tatami and shoji, and it was in a quiet area. There was a tiny udon restaurant nearby, 800¥ for a bowl. The nearest convenience store was a bit far. All the rooms are upstairs on the second floor, and the staircase is very narrow, awkward with a suitcase or bags. The washing machine and dryer weren’t working during my stay. The blanket was small and kept bunching into a lump, so I had to spread it out again and again.

I don’t usually leave negative reviews, but this experience seems worth sharing. One person here, either a staff member or a long-term resident acting like one, repeatedly showed little awareness or consideration for others. Around 1 a.m. on my first night, he brought someone new into our 6-8 bed dorm, switched on the main lights, and gave them a loud, full-volume tour while people were trying to sleep. I could have put that down to one careless moment, except it got worse. Later, while I was having a quiet conversation with another guest, he suddenly yelled across the room to his friend, apparently on purpose to startle and interrupt us. It worked, and felt deliberately disruptive. I don’t know whether this is a Florida thing or just this one guy, but the behavior is way out of line for a shared living space. Future guests should know he’s around and doesn’t seem to care about basic courtesy or quiet hours.

A perfect cheap hostel in Osaka. Don’t expect much and it’ll serve you well. The walls are thin, but that does make the place lively.

The staff are what make this place, it’s such a wholesome, friendly spot. The beds aren’t very comfortable, and you’re lucky to get a proper mattress. I had two half futons and a duvet. It didn’t bother me too much, but still. Having to go downstairs and walk through the whole hostel to reach the showers is a bit shite. And they “have to” make you leave while the common areas get cleaned, which isn’t ideal.
