R Hotel-The Atelier Shinsaibashi East

The room looked fresh, modern, and stylish, but the bathroom was extremely tiny. That could be uncomfortable if you’re used to more space, especially for European guests. The location is handy for nightlife, with bars and restaurants right outside. Service was fine in general, though English communication was limited and the receptionist often seemed tied up on the phone. The bathroom was clean, but under the bed could have used more attention. Compared with similar places we stayed at in Kyoto, this cost noticeably more while offering less, so the value didn’t feel great.

The way the hotel responded to my negative review only reinforced my feeling that they don’t know how to handle criticism. I’ve never had a service worker be as rude as the man who helped my partner check in, and this experience made me write a review for the first time. He wouldn’t let us eat a meal in the hotel room. We’re guests who paid to stay there, and I expected to be treated with the same respect we show others.

The staff are what made this hotel especially good. They were friendly, the service was great, and the manager even let us into our room at noon without charging extra. It was also one of the most convenient areas we stayed in, near transit, local restaurants, convenience stores, and within walking distance of Dotonbori. We slept better here than anywhere else on our Japan trip. The bed and pillows were the most comfortable we’d had. The rooms are small, but that’s clear in the listing and reflected in the price. There’s no laundry service, though several coin laundromats are nearby. The hotel accepts luggage deliveries from other hotels, but doesn’t send luggage itself. Yamato is a five minute walk away, and Family Mart is three minutes away; both handle luggage delivery.

R Hotel - The Atelier was our first stop on this Japan trip and had everything we needed: a double bed, window, cooling, bathroom, shower, bath, and WiFi. It was clean and the staff were friendly. The rooms aren’t for anyone looking for space or luxury, but in a busy city like Osaka, we didn’t spend that much time at the hotel anyway. It checked all the boxes for us.
