Sugata Hotel Osaka Shinsaibashi, Series by Marriott

Our stay fell well short of what the price and presentation led us to expect. The rooms felt poorly cleaned and were incredibly small, more like a micro hotel. We couldn’t even open our luggage fully. The online photos make the place look like a luxury stay, which is very misleading. We also found large cockroaches in our room, even on a high floor, and I have photos and video. After we told the front desk, they moved us to another room on a higher floor. The staff, manager included, seemed indifferent and didn’t apologize. I noticed the hotel had recently changed its name from Bespoke Hotel to Sugata Hotel. My guess is they’re trying to clean up their image. Searching for Bespoke hotel turns up many reviews describing similar experiences. I’d strongly recommend looking elsewhere.

The staff were courteous and helpful, and there’s plenty of dining and nightlife nearby. Though the rooms are small by Western standards, they’re thoughtfully fitted and laid out well. A brand new hotel, and good value for the price.

I had a wonderful three-night stay, so don’t trust those other reviews. The room was great, the hallway was spacious, and the staff were welcoming and helpful. I sent my luggage from Tokyo, and they received and stored it nicely. There’s a 7-11 and FamilyMart right across the hotel. It’s walkable to Shinsaibashi shopping street and the famous Glico man on Dotonbori street, and the hotel sits between two metro stations, which gives you options for getting around.

The lobby is clean and looks new, and the hotel itself seems fairly new too. It has the amenities you need, and the staff really try to help. The location’s convenient, on a quieter corner, with both 7-11 and FamilyMart right across the street.
