We spent five days at Toho Hotel Namba Motomachi as a family of three. It’s a budget hotel with no frills, and it delivered more than I expected for that kind of place. I’d call it the best low-budget hotel I’ve stayed in, and I’d come back to Osaka and stay here again. The location made our visit easy. Namba Station is about a ten-minute walk, and JR-Namba is similarly close, with a bus terminal there too. You can reach Namba directly by underground train from Kansai International Airport, while coaches go to and from Osaka Itami airport. Dotonbori and its restaurants, shops, arcades, and nightlife are only a few minutes away. There’s also a small Family-mart right next door. For Japan, the room was a decent size and clean. Ours had a fridge, desk, TV, wall USB charging ports, kettle, and somewhere to hang coats. The double room had two queen beds, which we pushed together into one very large bed. The bed was comfortable. The toilet area was quite small with little room to move, but it had a sink, shower, and the usual high-tech Japanese-style bowl. Shampoo, conditioner, hand wash, and body wash were supplied in dispensers and seemed good quality. Reception also offered free toiletries like shavers, shower caps, ear buds, and tissues. The lobby can look messy because the concierge keeps luggage there for guests who have checked out. Still, that storage service is useful. Beside the lobby, there’s a common room open from 7 AM to 10 PM, with free coffee, tea, hot chocolate, Pepsi, and other local soft drinks. It has about 12 small tables plus two outdoors. We saw people eat takeaway meals there. It was handy for waiting for others, and for me, as someone dealing with jet lag, it gave me somewhere to sit in the very early hours.

The staff were kind and helpful, and available around the clock. They speak Japanese and English. The hotel is in a quiet residential area, within walking distance of the busy shopping district. It’s about ten minutes to Namba station on the subway, around 15 minutes to Dontonbori, and just steps from Namba Yasaka Jinja. I chose a superior room this time. It had twin beds and much more space than a typical Japanese room, at an affordable price, so large luggage wasn’t a problem. The hotel isn’t new, but it’s well maintained. I noticed a little smell from a bathroom pipe, I think.

The beds were a good size, and the room felt pretty spacious, so that’s why I’m giving five stars. I really appreciated the free drinks too. I miss having my free CC every morning and night.

For around US$70 a night, this hotel was a steal for its quality and location. I’d happily stay again next time I’m in Osaka, and recommend it. My rating would have been a perfect five if the early checkout hadn’t gone sideways, though I understand it was very early. I booked last minute and was lucky to get a room. It was compact but clean, with enough space for two people and a couple of large suitcases. The bathroom was larger than in many standard three-star hotels in Japan and had a bathtub. My room’s big window looked onto the street and brought in lovely morning sunlight. It’s about a 7-10 minute walk from Namba Station and close to Namba Nankai station for a quick trip to Kansai Airport. The neighborhood felt peaceful and quiet despite being near a busy road. Dining and other good spots in Namba are right nearby. The staff were helpful when I asked about things to do and the best way to reach the station. You really just need to walk. At checkout around 4:30 AM, though, I couldn’t find anyone. I waited over ten minutes and rang the front desk bell, then left my keys and a note at the desk to catch the first airport train.

We stayed four nights. The hotel offered good value, useful facilities, and helpful staff. It was central enough while still peaceful, and everything we needed was close by.
