On my day visit, I could use a private bath at no extra charge. The water is 100% natural hot spring water without circulation. It was only slightly cloudy, with a faint burnt smell, and felt a little slimy.

I only stopped in to use the onsen, without staying overnight. A private bath can be booked for 40 minutes at ¥500 per person. The facilities were clean, and bath users had plenty of things provided, including a hair dryer.

The onsen is awesome, and there are regular baths as well as private onsen rooms, with no extra charge. That’s especially nice for couples who don’t want to pay a lot for a private bath. Breakfast will leave you stuffed, and dinner will make you very happy and just as full. The rooms available, the retro feel, and all that history make this hard to beat. I was told the place is around 150 years old, or close to it, though I can’t remember exactly. It could use a small overhaul, but if you want traditional Japanese character, this is the place. You could choose more modern onsen hotels nearby, but visit every bit of this one to get a feel for its heritage and potential. Pretty much every inch feels historic.
