The spring facilities have been renovated and seem to be under new management, but the price is now almost three times higher. The cold spring has different water now, and that used to be the best part. I came a long way on a Saturday only to be told it was closed. Very disappointing.
The hot baths are great, and one feels almost like hot seawater. The salt feels so good on your skin. But I especially love cold-water onsens, and this hotel has the best cold-water onsen bath in all of Kyushu. Its water is dark brown and packed with minerals. This is a really, really good onsen!
For 600 yen you can use the onsen, with another 100-200 yen for a locker or towel rental. The facilities were great, and they have a cold onsen too, which is uncommon. There’s also massage service and a restaurant inside. Outside, there’s a kayak rental center. A perfect place to unwind.
The hotel looks nice, but the onsen felt a bit shabby. One pool was empty, several showers weren’t working, and there was no outdoor area to rest.
When I lived in Japan, this was my weekend hideaway. It’s an amazing place where you could spend 24 hours doing nothing. Can’t wait to go back.
