The owners have just about every amenity you might want, from phone chargers with different kinds of ports to snorkeling gear rentals and insect repellent. There's even a cat in the garden, which cat lovers might enjoy. It's an old house, so sounds from the floors and doors carry quite a bit, and you have to be mindful of the other guests. The hospitality more than makes up for that.

There's a cat outside, which makes the place feel relaxing, and the beach is only a short walk away. At night you can unwind looking up at the stars. The old house has lots of records, so you can even work remotely with good music playing. The owner was kind and told me about some great places and izakayas in Amami.

At the end of March, when travel restrictions were starting because of the coronavirus, one of my companions came down with a fever. We asked to cancel the day before our trip, thinking about the trouble we might cause the islanders. They agreed to cancel over the phone without asking for an explanation, then demanded a 100% cancellation fee. Booking.com tried to negotiate for us but got no reply for a long time. Just before the payment deadline, the facility asked us to provide a doctor's note about the fever. If you have a fever, you should rest at home for a while before going to a hospital. It's disappointing to think the facility's self-serving attitude may have contributed to the spread of infections on Amami Oshima. I absolutely don't recommend this service.

Even though we booked at short notice during the New Year holidays, they welcomed us with smiles and gave us lots of detailed information about the neighborhood when we checked in. The guesthouse seems to have almost every amenity you could want. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a guesthouse in southern Amami Oshima, and I'd definitely stay again when I visit.
