The owner’s family has run the place for more than 50 years, so they know the area well. It’s clean and very well maintained. The owner doesn’t speak English, but he’ll do his best to help with anything. If you book, try calling directly. They may be able to offer a discount without agency fees, though their own website charges extra fees. They can also arrange a local cruise at a discount. There seem to be plenty of regulars who return season after season.

The room was really clean and comfortable, and the food was great. The staff were lovely and very friendly. A great place to stay!

If you don’t have a car, this guesthouse is handy: it’s right across from the Utoro Bus Center. I was able to leave my luggage before check-in and after check-out, and the owner was as friendly and helpful as other reviews say. My room had a fan. On September 6th, it was very cool with the windows open. The bathroom has a clean Japanese-style bath that’s lovely to soak in. Thanks for the warm hospitality. I’d definitely stay here again next time I’m in Shiretoko.

I was a little nervous before going in, but the owner turned out to be incredibly kind and friendly, and taught me a lot. I didn’t take a single photo, though! 💦 The room was spacious, the futon surprisingly comfortable, and the whole place had that faint tatami smell. The nights were cool and pleasant 😽. The shared toilet and sink were both spacious and super clean. Everything was very clean 👍 There were lots of places to eat near the station, and the pork bowl from the local convenience store was delicious. Sadly, I couldn’t get into the izakaya or ramen shops because they were either closed or fully booked with reservations only. This might be my favourite hotel of my Hokkaido trip. I’d love to stay again next time! 🙌🏻

I spent three nights here in August 2024, figuring four days would cover the sights I’d picked around Utoro. I planned seafood near Utoro Fishing Port, the Shiretoko Goko Walk from Shiretoko Goko Field House, the Virgin Forest Nature Walk from Shiretoko Nature Center, a Lake Rausu Trek from Shiretoko Pass, and a cruise to Cape Shiretoko. Fog canceled the boat cruise, but Utoro itself and the other sights made this an inn I’d like to return to. Shiretoko Pereke is right across from the Shari Bus Utoro Terminal, about a 20-second walk away. The nearest 7-Eleven, open 6-24, is three minutes away on foot. Utoro Fishing Port is just under ten minutes away, and Utoro Shirietoku Roadside Station is five minutes away. There’s parking, but it’s also a great choice if you arrive by bus. This is an inexpensive, family-run Japanese minshuku, with Japanese-style rooms where you make your own futon. The bathroom and toilets are shared, separated for men and women, but you don’t share a room with strangers like in a dormitory. It may not suit everyone. If you want a resort with beds, cutlery and a stylish entrance, or an elevator, look for that kind of place instead. I found Shiretoko Pereke comfortable and attractive, and was welcomed with freshly cooked meals, beer and pure rice sake. The Wi-Fi stayed stable even in my room at the very back. Some reviews complain about the lack of air conditioning. Utoro doesn’t need it, even when August is hot: nights can fall below 20°C. My room had a fan. The microwave and refrigerator are shared, and bath towels are in the closets in each room. Before posting that these weren’t provided, people may have missed the “Please Read” notice on the desk or could have asked the owner. Please share the common facilities instead of monopolizing them. The owner was born and raised in Utoro and knows the area well. It’s a family business, so he can be busy, but if you ask at the right time, he may be able to help. I also saw that some foreign travellers seemed unfamiliar with the area. We Japanese should be glad to help anyone who’s in trouble, even if they don’t know the etiquette of a Japanese-style guesthouse, and help them become fans of Japan. One unrelated caution: nearby lodgings may have questionable circumstances, including some run by people involved in the 2022 sinking accident, places where Japanese isn’t spoken, and properties with managerial positions available. Please research carefully before deciding. The attached 360-degree interior photos were taken with the owner’s permission. Owner, please take care of yourself.
