I had stayed here before and thought the location and room were nice. Then a typhoon was heading through the area, so I needed to cancel. My credit card company couldn't get through to the hotel, and I had to call myself. They charged me the equivalent of 1.5 days as a cancellation fee and said the typhoon wasn't coming directly. I attached a weather map showing that it was. It felt almost like a scam, as if they only wanted my money and didn't care about customers.

We stayed two nights in mid-November and enjoyed it enough to come back. The hotel is old, but clean and well maintained, and the staff were nice. They offer a welcome drink and snack in the afternoon, plus a happy hour with alcoholic drinks.

The view over Shimoda bay from our huge, clean bedroom was incredible. We loved the place, especially the onsen, which had both indoor and outdoor baths and was probably the best hotel onsen I’ve seen. There’s even a game room.

The bay looks great from the big onsen, and the food was impeccable. Every staff member gave excellent service. The hotel has a rustic, retro feel, which I liked. Thanks for a memorable stay.

The place is a bit out of the way, and it’s clearly old, though you can tell it must once have been splendid. Still, we had a great stay. The rooms are enormous, the beds were the most comfortable we had in Japan, and our in-room onsen looked out across the bay. Even the bathroom had two hairdryers. The reception area and upstairs facilities are huge. There’s a gift shop, a kids’ activity area, and a fish foot spa at reception. The staff were so friendly and helpful, I’d give them six stars if I could.
