The two private onsen baths inside were fine and seemed well maintained. The location is okay, a little outside town and near a somewhat busy street. My Japanese-style room felt overdesigned: there was a lamp hanging about 165 cm above the floor, so I had to watch my head every time I crossed the room. The blanket was only about 170 to 180cm long, which I’ve never encountered before. One staff member struggled a bit with English, and they couldn’t provide razors.

The reception was really, really friendly, and he did his best to help me book transportation. Many thanks to him. I stayed one night, and the room and onsen were cozy and larger than I expected. The place also smelled nice as soon as I walked in.

The private onsen was amazing, and the whole atmosphere was breathtaking. The rooms were spacious and had everything I needed, and the staff were great and helped with everything. They speak some English. There are bike rentals in the building, and I’d absolutely recommend renting one for a day to ride around shimoda or check out nearby beaches. One of the best ryokans or hotels I’ve ever stayed in.

This was one of our favorite stays in Japan. The ryokan is a short walk from town, in a lovely sleepy place that was perfect for getting out of the city and relaxing. Our room had all we needed, including a TV with Netflix, plus its own shower and bathroom. The private onsen was a huge bonus, and we ended up going every evening. We’d highly recommend it and come back if we visit the Izu peninsula again.

The place was quiet and respectful, and all the amenities were clean and tidy. There are lovely little artistic touches around the rooms and the rest of Ryokan Ogawa. I found the stay excellent and very economical. I hired a bike for a day of sightseeing and had a wonderful time exploring Shimoda that way. The staff were helpful and went out of their way to assist, even though their English wasn’t great. Highly recommend.
