2025.11 The proprietress has a cheerful smile that made me feel comfortable, though honestly the price seemed a little high. There are plenty of other places I could stay for the same amount. The guesthouse itself is old and needs repairs in several spots, but the elderly owner is somehow keeping it going. It's very cold inside. There were few guests, which made things quiet and relaxing. Sitting near the hearth was warm, and the charcoal crackling was nice to listen to. Dinner was mostly salty, while breakfast leaned sweet. Dinner was already set out in the main hall before we were called in, so the tempura and simmered dishes had gone cold. The hot pot, soup, and hearth-warmed trout were served hot. The rice was soft and came in a large container. With a JAF membership card, they offer a bottle of beer for free. I was excited about the hot spring's pH of 10. It did leave my skin feeling smooth, but the open-air bath has no washing area and the water is only warm, so you can soak for a long time and gradually heat up. Of the two indoor baths with washing areas, one couldn't be used because the boiler was broken. The other was quite lukewarm, maybe around 39 degrees Celsius, and I started feeling cold in it. I worry that this boiler may be close to its limit too. They told me there are no bears. Apparently people ask them that all the time.
