I’ll never forget this traditional Japanese inn tucked away from the usual routes. I came alone and drove from Tokyo, which took about 6 hours with coffee stops at service areas. The drive through Shizuoka was pretty, with lovely close-up views of Mt. Fuji. The inn’s staff were international and spoke English. Both buildings are registered as cultural treasures with the Japanese government. My renovated traditional room was lovely, and I enjoyed long walks nearby, visiting a small local museum, meeting one of the melon farmers, and simply taking in the mild weather and beautiful air. It’s across the bay from Ise Shrine, and the whole area felt kind of blessed. The food and onsen were amazing too.

I stayed the night before taking the Ise Bay Ferry from Tokyo to Ise Grand Shrine. The charming Japanese-style building has been beautifully renovated, and the rooms are spacious, with massage chairs. There’s also a free drink corner where you can enjoy alcoholic drinks until 5 PM. Meals and the large public bath are at Kakujoro, about a 2-minute walk away. That building has also been renovated with care, and the food was satisfying in both taste and menu. The bath may only fit about 6 people. Service was excellent, and I believe the staff were Nepalese. I’d like to come back if I get the chance.

The staff were polite, helpful, and easy to understand when speaking Japanese, which made me feel at ease. They also answered my questions quickly. I came for a trip at the end of the year and had a relaxing, thoroughly satisfying stay. The room was nice and the food was good. My only wish is that the semi-open-air bath in the room had been a hot spring.

Even with the rain, two staff members came to greet us with umbrellas as soon as we pulled into the parking lot. The inn has a real sense of Japanese history, as you’d expect from a romantic inn. From check-in until 5pm, the cafe offers self-service beer and soft drinks, which was nice. Our room was spacious and comfortable, with massage chairs that looked fairly expensive. There are two private baths, and the changing rooms, washing areas, and tubs all have plenty of room. We had to go about two minutes to the main building for meals, but since it was raining, a staff member drove us over. A foreign staff member served us there and did his best to speak beautiful Japanese. He’d only been in Japan for two months, but despite having studied the language back home, he could talk with Japanese people on a par with them. That was down to his own hard work as well as the solid training, including the way dishes were explained. The stay, food, hot springs, and service were all excellent.

We had a high-quality stay in this renovated old house. It’s still old, but they’ve kept the atmosphere of the past.
