Hotel Takachiho

We tried sleeping on tatami as a family for the first time, and it was comfortable. The hotel feels traditional and was clean, with good service. They provide yukata for all ages. We also enjoyed the breakfast and dinner, which were authentic Japanese food at affordable prices. Guests can use the public baths too.

The room was lovely, with a beautiful view, and it was quiet around the hotel. My husband and I stayed as a couple, but it’s clearly set up to welcome kids too. There was a nice indoor play space, with lots of books along the walls, something I haven’t seen at other hotels in Japan. We booked a Western-style bedroom, though tatami rooms with futons are available. The bathrooms were Western-style, which we appreciated. We could easily walk to some of the best meals we’ve ever had, and the temple was just a quick walk away for the nightly show featuring one of Japan’s oldest forms of dance. Service was wonderful, and a few people at the desk spoke English and gave us really good restaurant recommendations.

The tatami-style hotel was spacious, quiet, and really cosy at night. There’s an on-site onsen using a mineral-water mix. Guests can enjoy free-flow shochu tasting in the lobby, and the hotel lends out seat cushions for free if you’re going to see the kagura dance.

The carpet was the one real downside, very dingy. Otherwise, I’d recommend the hotel for its value and especially its friendly, helpful staff. It’s close to the gorge and an easy walk to Takachiho-jinja (Takachiho Shrine). My single room was comfortable, with a good bed, balcony, and amazing view. I ate dinner in the hotel restaurant. I hadn’t made the required dinner reservation, but the kitchen kindly let me order from the lunch menu. I was grateful, since it was a holiday and nearly every restaurant I passed while driving was closed.
