There’s no lift to the apartment on the second floor, which could be awkward with heavy bags. Inside, it’s spacious and has basic amenities, but it can get quite cold in winter, so keep that in mind for a cold-weather visit. One of the two bedrooms is actually a living room with beds in it. The host was quick to respond and let us check in early, which helped a lot. The apartment is within walking distance of the train and bus stations, restaurants, convenience stores, and old Takayama town.

I’m very disappointed. I was charged for a booking that I’d been told could be cancelled for free. I wrote to the property asking for a refund, but after more than four months I still haven’t heard anything. What can I do?
