I've stayed here three times over the past eight years, most recently yesterday, and it's been a lovely experience each time. The owners are warm and kind, and the food is extraordinary. Whenever I'm in Takayama, I come back to this pension. I'd gladly recommend it.

The bedrooms look modest, but don't let that put you off. This was a great choice for our three-night countryside break between Kyoto and Tokyo, and a chance to experience genuine Japanese hospitality. The shuttle was flexible enough that getting into the city centre wasn't an issue. Breakfast was delicious and changed every day, which my mother appreciated since she isn't keen on Japanese food. We also had Hida beef for dinner, and it was excellent. On our way down from the temple route, we stopped at Casa Sola, a small café in town that's also owned by the parents. We had a lovely stay.
