Machiyado Ichiryu

The team at MACHIYADO ICHIRYU helped make an unforgettable proposal possible. Rieko san and her team arranged extra items for our room while we were at dinner, and even rehearsed the setup in the room next door. Rieko san coordinated with me on LINE through her personal account beforehand, which showed how dedicated she was. Without their help, I couldn’t have made the proposal I’d always imagined. They were genuine, accommodating people, and I’m deeply grateful to them. The place is right in the heart of Takayama, about a five-minute walk from the central area and roughly 10-15 minutes on foot from the train station. If you’re driving, there’s a parking lot on the other side of the block. The ryokan has one public Onsen and two private ones, one bookable and the other available to everyone. The room was beautiful and had the essentials, and the service was probably the most attentive and caring we’ve ever received. It holds a special place in our hearts, and we intend to come back to share this memory again. The food at the restaurant across the street was amazing that night. I owe a lot to the people at MACHIYADO ICHIRYU. If you want to be pampered and experience Japanese service and hospitality, this is the place we’d recommend. We hope to see the team again soon!

The room’s bath was amazing, and the downstairs onsen were really nice. We also loved the massage chairs. The attentive service made the whole stay feel luxurious. It was such a great visit.

The rooms and decor were beautiful, and I was struck by the warm hospitality, attention to detail, and amenities. For such a small ryokan, it offered more than I expected. I stayed two nights and would definitely like to come back. The meals were the disappointing part. The dishes were generous and beautifully presented, but I didn’t enjoy dinner or breakfast, which was a pity since dining is such an important part of a ryokan stay. Other reviews praise the food, so it may come down to personal preference. Still, even the Hida beef at dinner was chewy, tough, and heavy or greasy, and didn’t compare with what I’d had at street stalls or other restaurants. I’d shared dietary preferences in advance, but they seemed to have been missed when I brought them up at check-in. They were followed at dinner, then apparently forgotten again at breakfast. There was also a dining room light casting a constantly moving shadow. It’s a small detail, but distracting and uncomfortable over a long dinner. I hope the ryokan does well, and I’d like to give it another try when I’m back.

We were so happy with our stay that we would’ve added another night if there’d been a room. The team were warm and helpful throughout, even offering to keep our bags and drive us to our next hotel. My husband and I would come back in a heartbeat.
