Ryokan Sansui

Staying here as a solo traveler felt like a real privilege, especially at such an affordable price. The food, hospitality, onsen, and views were all 10/10. This beautiful ryokan in the fukiji onsen village completely blew me away. I hope I can visit again someday. The drive from Takayama is beautiful too.

Eight years ago I came here with my family. Now I’m back with my wife and kid, and Ryokan Sansui still blows me away. When we were planning our 2025 Japan road trip, it was always the anchor we built the itinerary around. That’s how memorable this place was. I love the staff and the big shared reception room, with comfy sofas and windows stretching from floor to ceiling. There’s a rustic charm to the place, and I love the chilly mountain air and sitting in the outdoor onsens for ages while looking at the cold moon. The rooms are wonderful, with valley views, kept clean and refreshed every day. You sleep on tatami with padded futons in a bright, warm room, after a soak in the ofuro or onsens and a 13-course hotel dinner. I end up feeling deeply relaxed, as if every cell in my body has finally exhaled after holding its breath forever. I’ll always want to come back.

The mountain view was stunning, and the staff were fantastic about helping us. There weren’t many guests while we were there, and the onsens happened to be empty when we went, which we felt lucky about. It had the quiet atmosphere that most city hotels are missing. The food was plentiful and excellent.

We went in mid-March 2025 and seemed to be the only guests. The place was very quiet, but the service was excellent and felt private. The staff tried their best to explain things in English and even suggested we go out for dinner, since all the restaurants close early. Everything was shut by 19:30, so plan your day around that and don’t expect places to be open late. There isn’t a convenience shop, so come prepared. We really appreciated how concerned they were that we hadn’t eaten yet. Breakfast was amazing and grand by my experience so far, definitely worth it. The outdoor private onsen was a bit dirty and not worth it if you’re hoping for a large or especially scenic bath. The view from the room, though, was amazing.
