We spent two nights here with half-board, so breakfast and dinner were included. This is a nearly 200-year-old traditional Ryokan B&B, a real treat if you want to try something very traditional in Japan. We left our shoes outside, of course, and the friendly family hostess welcomed us and explained the house rules, how to wear the supplied Kimono, bathing, and the toilets. The restaurant is downstairs, while the sparse rooms are on the first floor. They have tatami mats, a couple of “pillows,” and air conditioning that hardly works. There’s no central heating. In April, with the temperature at 10 degrees and no insulation, that was quite an experience. Dinner was really nice, with several dishes including soup, grilled fish, and pickles. Breakfast was simple but very good, as expected. The place is a bit out of the way. To reach the center of this historic city, you have to cross back over the Takayama line railway track. Enjoy your historic stay!

The owner couple are very nice and helpful. You may love Sosuke, and be surprised by the quality of the service and accommodation for a reasonable price. The building has a history, but the rooms, living space, entrance, toilets, and bathroom were all clean. There’s no lift, so you’ll need to be fit enough to climb to the second-floor rooms. It’s a 10-minute walk from the station and 20 minutes from the central area. The route has no slope, so I think it’s easy to walk.

The hosts were very friendly and accommodating. The Japanese breakfast was an outstanding taste of local food traditions. I’m sure the Western breakfast is fine, but don’t miss the traditional one by playing it safe. Highly recommended.

We came across this cafe while walking back to town from hida no sato. The blood orange juice was refreshing, the coffee and orange muffins were really good, and the seating arrangement was very nice.

I love Takayama, and I love staying here. This lovely little Minshuku has great hosts who cater for Gluten Free guests, and the breakfasts are amazing. It’s a short walk to both Takayama town and Huda Folk Village, so it’s affordable and well placed for exploring, whether you’re visiting the temple next door, heading to the folk village and mountain trails, or just wandering around town. The facilities are amazing, including fantastic baths, air conditioning, and a lovely communal area. I do wish the Futon mattresses were a little softer, though. Highly recommended.
