Ryoso Tsuyukusa

The people here were the best part of my stay. They were kind from the moment I arrived, and it felt natural and consistent the whole time. That warmth, along with the comfort, cleanliness, and excellent facilities, made this one of the highlights of my trip. The room and shared areas were spotless and clearly well cared for. The bed was incredibly soft, making it easy to unwind after a day exploring. Breakfast was a treat too, with fresh, delicious bread and rich, warm coffee made just right. Getting around was simple because everything felt close and accessible. The facilities were clean, well organized, and thoughtfully set up. For a stay that felt relaxing and memorable, Ryoso Tsuyukusa was a great choice.

Edit: I appreciate the owners’ kind response, but after the shock of being hit by an employee, I couldn’t sleep. I was afraid to be in the main building in case I was yelled at or assaulted again, so I can’t honestly recommend staying here. The rooms are tiny but functional, and for the price it’s a good place. My favorite thing was the kitchen area, with a fridge, stove, sink, coffee machine and free coffee, cutlery, and to-go coffee cups. One staff member, a young Vietnamese girl, was lovely. The old lady was awful. When I first arrived, she was rude and walked away while I was speaking to her in Japanese. My room code hadn’t been sent, so I was having trouble checking in, but she didn’t even try to listen. Later, after using the onsen, I was in the massage chair with my jacket and towels in a basket on the floor, tucked out of the walking path, and a cup of water beside it. There was a storage room door nearby. She kicked over the water, yelled at me and at other guests passing by, then slapped my feet while I was lying in the chair and couldn’t move. It was an awful interruption to a relaxing onsen visit and massage. I’m glad I was staying in the annex so I didn’t have to deal with her more. I don’t usually tell a business how to operate, but based on other reviews, the old lady shouldn’t be in a customer-facing role. Original review:

The public onsen was so peaceful, and we really enjoyed the massage chair and the traditional robes provided for the onsen. The landlord is a great artist, with beautiful stained glass throughout the facility. When we realized we badly needed cash for the next leg of our trip and there was no ATM in town, the landlord helped us get it, saving us an hour-long bus ride back to Takayama. The lovely tatami floor, onsens, and caring staff made our stay cozy and special. We had a wonderful time and highly recommend it.

Right in the center of Hirayu, with everything close by. The room was clean, service was good, and there was free bread and coffee for breakfast. Good parking and a private onsen too. I want to come back.
