Kyukamura Ohkunoshima

We’ve stayed at Kyukamura Ohkunoshima for one or two nights with our kids while visiting the island, and it’s a great base for a Rabbit Island trip. We like to arrive early on day one, explore and spend time with the bunnies, stay overnight, then have a little more bunny time the next morning before leaving in the afternoon. One night has been enough for a relaxed, memorable visit. The hotel sits right on the island, with nature, water views, and bunnies hopping around everywhere. The building feels a bit outdated, but it’s clean, well-kept, and comfortable, which is what we needed after a day outside. We rented two Japanese-style twin rooms with baths and toilets, which worked well for our family. The beds were comfortable, and waking up to the water and bunnies just outside was special. We didn’t use the onsen this time, though guests can. There’s a casual café serving things throughout the day like ice cream, ramen, curry, and other simple comfort food. The gift shop has sweets and cute bunny-themed souvenirs. The main restaurant serves dinner and breakfast buffets. We booked the Shimanami Taste Buffet. There was plenty of variety, but the food was fairly average overall, and I wouldn’t want it more than once. It’s easy to explore the island from here. You can rent bikes, Segways, fishing poles, and bait. The staff also arrange group activities such as morning walks and evening tours, and they’re consistently friendly, helpful, and especially welcoming to families. The island has a deeper history beyond the bunnies, too. The Poison Gas Museum gives an educational look at its past and adds context to a place that now feels so peaceful. Kyukamura Ohkunoshima is simple, comfortable, and charming, especially for families. It isn’t luxurious, but it’s warm and convenient, with bunnies all around and plenty of memorable moments.
