The Genghis Khan was tasty, and the portions of soup and sashimi were generous. But I gave it a low rating because of the way the children who live here were raised. At the very least, guest rooms should be treated as guest rooms. They came straight in without knocking and asked to play. Maybe people in the countryside are used to everyone knowing each other, but barging into a guest room without permission doesn’t seem right to me.

I booked a dinner-only plan before an early Sunday ride on the Venus Line, staying one Saturday night. As people had said, the dinner was very satisfying: the horse sashimi and what seemed to be salmon were both delicious, and the Genghis Khan was filling. I ended up having three bowls of rice. The room and bathroom were very clean, and the futons were fluffy, so I slept comfortably. I’d like to stay again next time I ride the Venus Line. Thank you.

I’ve kept coming to Suzuran-so, first for training camps with my university tennis club, then with my university friends after graduating. Later, when I started a family, I introduced them to the owner. Looking back through the camp photos was always something I looked forward to. I learned today, from the condolence letter, that the owner has passed away. My deepest condolences. I promise I’ll keep coming in the future. Suzuran-so is the best. Please keep it going!

The facilities are old, but they’re well cared for, and you can feel the history of the people who’ve looked after the place. The meals had a good mix of hot and cold dishes, with generous portions. It was a cozy guesthouse, the sort of place I’d like to make my regular stay in Northern Yatsugatake. They also have a nice selection of Nagano sake, so you can enjoy some without needing to go out and buy it.

Dinner and breakfast are both delicious, and the place has a homey, relaxing feel. There’s a cute dog and a cute son too. Lake Megami is right in front, and Lake Shirakaba is less than a 10-minute drive away. The mountain setting is also known for training camps for athletes and students. Prices are easy on the wallet, and there’s an all-you-can-drink menu with a wide range of alcoholic drinks. I’d recommend it.
