The outdoor onsen was the part I’ll remember most. Soaking in the quiet forest, with snow all around and stars above, felt special. The room had plenty of space to spread out all our luggage, and the food was amazing, with local Hokkaido ingredients prepared with care at dinner. After two nights at Moritsubetsu Onsen, I left feeling like all my worries had washed away. For me, it’s a one-of-a-kind onsen.

I couldn’t use the public onsen because I have a few tattoos, but there’s a private one you can rent for 2000 yen an hour. It was lovely and relaxing. The front Office and restaurant both look out over the forest and a beautiful garden. You can sit outside with a beer and watch all kinds of birds just beyond the window. I’d come back.

With no other food options nearby, I’d recommend choosing half board. The dinner was fantastic, and the chef really knows how to play with your taste buds. The onsen is very comfortable and leaves your skin feeling silky. The place is in the forest near Tsubetsu pass, where deer, foxes, raccoons and other wild animals share the woods. Staying here feels relaxing.

The dining room has a huge curved wall of windows looking out onto the forest, and both the food and service were excellent. It’s big enough to have all the amenities, but not so big that it hosts bus tour groups. The onsen is amazing, with a proper cold plunge, sauna, and indoor and outdoor baths among giant volcanic boulders and trees. This is my idea of a perfect onsen ryokan, tucked away in a beautiful forest but still easy to reach. One of my favorite stays across my many trips around Japan.

We loved having the onsen-yukatas and all the other amenities, and the lobby is pretty, with a gift shop. There’s a nice outdoor walking area by a river, too. My boyfriend and I are tourists from America, and we were very happy with the place. The staff were kind and helpful, our room was clean and nice, and the food was delicious and authentic. I recommend adding breakfast and dinner. You can choose a time that suits you, and the food is ready at the restaurant. Our server took time to explain the dishes and translate them into English for us. We hope to visit again soon ❤️
