We stayed at Wakkanupuri Resorts Rera, the quieter sibling of the original Wakkanupuri. The style is a Nordic-Japanese chic hideaway, tucked between the lake and forest, about a ten-minute drive south of the original. There are only four buildings across a huge area, so it felt like a secret spot. It sits beside Japan’s largest caldera lake, the second largest in the world. Our one-bedroom house was about 800 square feet and built just inches from the lake. The other house was set a little farther back from the beach. From the bedroom there was a view of the beach and lake, and the spacious onsen was heavenly, with wonderful views like the rest of the house. Lake Mashū and magical Mount Iō are nearby. I drove through thick mist to see that fairy-tale landscape. Dinner was the best traditional kaiseki, made with Hokkaido ingredients. The restaurant was in a separate house, with two spacious dining rooms split by the kitchen. Half board was $705. 5/5

A one-of-a-kind stay where you have the whole place to yourself. Choose between the in-room onsen, a bathhouse in the woods, or the open-air bath by the lake.

There’s just one group of guests each day, so the hotel feels very private. The Japanese and Northern European decor is lovely, and the room has its own hot spring. There’s also one near the lake, with a great view of Lake Kussharo. We even saw a wild fox run across the frozen lake! The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, and spoke English, which made things much easier. The food was delicious. The chef clearly picks special seasonal ingredients from different parts of Hokkaido, including pork from Obihiro and fresh seafood from Akkeshi and Shiretoko. The beautiful tableware made the meal even more enjoyable.

You get the whole house to yourselves, one party per day. The rooms are comfortable, with views of the lake, and the food was delicious, including wagyu beef or crab. The indoor and outdoor onsens both have lake views.
