The meals were a highlight. Dinner came with loads of dishes and was seriously filling. We added a hairy crab, served steamed and chilled, already opened but still awkward to eat because of its sharp spines and slightly stringy meat. Worth trying if you haven't had it before. Breakfast was traditional too, with lots of little sides, salmon, and as much rice, clam miso, natto, and nori as you wanted. We stayed in the basic family room, with futons on tatami, which was comfortable if that kind of bed works for you. The hallways had a faint mix of smoke and old-used-building smell. The resort seemed well kept, though its age showed. There may be Western-style rooms for smaller groups. The onsen was quiet after 8pm on a weekday. Its brown water smelled strongly of ammonia, which we expected. The baths were separated for men and women, and the family room wasn't available. There was a sauna, a cold bath, and hot spring pools at warm, warmer, and hot temperatures. There isn't much nearby, but this made a pleasant break on the way to wakkanai. It felt a little pricey, though families don't have many options in the area.

I remember spotting the unusual Gundam manhole cover and the colorful Teshio manhole cover nearby. They were fun local details and good photo stops. The onsen is also conveniently close to a campground, so it worked well for unwinding after time outdoors. Teshio Onsen Yubae is one of the first onsen places my family and I visited in Hokkaido, and it still means a lot to me. The natural hot springs made for a soothing, relaxing soak. There was a distinct sulfur smell, which felt characteristic of natural hot springs around here and added to the experience.

The cold outdoor pool was a real letdown. I couldn't stay in it for more than a minute. The facilities also felt very dated, especially considering it cost more than most onsens. I went for a day visit and found the staff quite rude. I hadn't realized riders house guests needed a coupon for the ¥100 discount. I showed my receipt as proof, but they just shrugged and charged me ¥600 for a ticket. After I paid, both men started talking to someone who had come in. I wandered around and got lost trying to find the onsen, when they could have simply told me it was upstairs as I handed over the ticket. There were signs all over warning that things were often stolen and telling visitors to be careful. I couldn't feel secure, so I washed and left as quickly as I could. I've been to many onsens, and this was the first that made me feel this uncomfortable. I wouldn't go back.

The attached onsen and restaurant were both fantastic, and busy, lively spots where locals seemed to meet up. Dinner was a feast, really tasty, and the service there was great. Our room was huge and looked almost brand new. The bathroom was bright and spotless, and the service was excellent and personable. We could open the windows for fresh air, and the Airon system worked well and was easy to set. A great find.
