The service was great, and there’s a tea ceremony at check-in. Breakfast is a buffet, but you have to pay extra for it. The room looked nice, though it wasn’t very clean: there was a lot of dust, a bloodstain on the curtain, a strange smell in the washroom, and mold around the bathtub and purifier. It’s a 10-15 minute walk to the train station, with few restaurants or convenience stores nearby. Given the cleanliness, we wouldn’t come back.

We spent six days at Hotel 1899 and were really happy with our stay. Shimbashi Station and other public transport are just a short walk away, with plenty of local restaurants and convenience stores nearby. The staff were friendly and quick to answer our emails before we arrived. Our standard double room fit us and our 5-year-old comfortably, and it was clean by Japanese standards. The mattress was firm, which I loved because my back didn’t hurt the next morning. Getting complimentary fresh matcha at the Tea Counter was a lovely bonus.
The station is about a 12-minute walk, and Ginza is around 20 minutes on foot. It’s a quiet, well-kept place, with spacious-enough rooms, a comfortable bed, and no noise. The staff were lovely too. We had to call our airline, and the receptionist helped us out.
The staff were patient with our English and broken Japanese, and really attentive whenever we needed something. We slept incredibly well in the quiet area, which is close to several stations and Tokyo Tower. The rooms are on the smaller side, as is common in Japan compared with Western-style hotels, but they were cleaned perfectly when we put the sign on the door, and they restocked the water every day. I loved the careful, artful tea service. Breakfast costs extra, but the huge variety and unusual foods made it well worth it. I’ll miss the Macha muffins when I’m home. You can also make your own tea or try the tea of the day at the drink station. This was our first stay in Tokyo, and Hotel 1899 made it wonderful. I hope to stay here again.
We’ve stayed twice, in 2023 and 2026, and both visits were great. The rooms still feel fresh and the service is just as good as the first time. Our room was spotless and well designed, with enough space for us to open two full-size suitcases. We liked being near lots of places while still tucked away on a quieter street. The staff are friendly, professional, and helpful, and the tea service is a lovely touch.
