The amount itself wasn't the main issue for me; I just don't want anyone else to have the unpleasant stay I had. We booked at the last minute through Booking.com because we needed somewhere near Ueno station for one night. The listing showed a room for 5,000 yen, but we were charged 13,500 yen and told the extra 8,500 yen was a CLEANING FEE. That's ridiculous when it cost more than the room. We would have been okay paying 8,500, but the roundabout way they charged us felt like a scam. When we challenged it, they said the fee was shown in a smaller section. It was NOT, and that was their first lie. They also said similar problems had happened with other guests before. We asked for a full refund, but they kept refusing and said they were following policy. They told us that if we contacted Booking and Booking confirmed free cancellation was possible, they'd refund us. That was another lie. We called Booking, and their agent emailed the hotel asking them to approve a free cancellation. The hotel only had to reply to confirm. I stayed on the phone with the agent to make sure the email went through properly. But when we called the hotel again, they denied ever getting an email from Booking. I asked to speak with the owner. They said they'd get him on the phone, then promptly hung up and never answered my calls again. From other reviews, the rooms sound gross anyway. I hope they go out of business soon.

Trash service from a trash company in a trash modern living setup. This isn't a homestay. It's a cheaply renovated, abandoned building right beside the train tracks.

Great location, since it's near the train station. I had a good stay.
