The buffet has plenty of choice at both dinner and breakfast, and the grounds and onsen feel clean and roomy. If you’re driving or riding a motorbike, Olivean is a good base for a weekend on Shodoshima from mainland Kansai. It’s also easy to head up to Mt. Kankakei for a morning drive.

The sunset and cherry blossoms are lovely, and the location is okay. But the rooms and facilities feel old, if not obsolete, and the food tastes bad. When the air conditioning is on, the room smells disgusting, almost as if there’s fungus in the unit. We wouldn’t recommend this hotel and will never stay here again. It was the worst hotel we’ve stayed at in Japan.

The staff were so friendly and welcoming, and we’d be happy to come back. It’s set up well for dogs, with a separate entrance for them and a place to wash their paws after using the dog run. The views are fantastic and the buffet has a decent selection. I only wish lunch were available on weekdays too, since it’s currently offered on weekends only.

For a big group looking for a fun outdoor meal, this could work, though it wouldn’t be my first choice. I came with my coworkers for an office barbecue. Most of the food was good, but the chicken had an odd flavor and might have been better marinated. The bathroom was like an outhouse, an awkward walk from the dining area.
