Tokutoteshima

The house itself was the highlight for me. It’s a traditional wooden place with sliding walls, tatami mats, and a double bed, alongside modern bathrooms and a shower. I slept on the tatami and found it a great experience. The garden is beautiful and carefully looked after, and the details throughout show a lot of attention. We rented the house for two nights, and it was absolutely the right call. The kitchen keeps the traditional feel, with breakfast made on a small gas stove. It all worked fine, and the hosts had stocked the fridge with what we needed, drinks included. Teshima is a small, easy-to-explore island that still feels authentic. We got around by bike, which worked perfectly. A big thanks to the owners. She brings the Japanese spirit, and he’s Australian, which made communication with international guests easy. They make a great team. I’d happily return and warmly recommend it to anyone traveling in Japan.

Alan made sure we had a great stay and shared all the best information about Teshima. The home is beautiful and roomy, and Alan is something special. I don’t think our time on the island would have been nearly as good without him.

We stayed at Tokuto a week ago, and everything went beyond what we expected. Reiko and Alan arranged the transportation and picked us up at the port, which made the trip so easy. The house gave us a traditional Japanese home experience with modern comfort. The kitchen was fully equipped, and they provided local eggs, milk, toast for breakfast, and strawberries. We had a cozy, generous breakfast, and the strawberries were so sweet. Also, the two little goats they raise live in a tree house on the hill behind the house. They were adorable!

The setting is remarkable, a classic Japanese villa on a small island with wonderful art. Tokuto was recommended to us, and we were very glad we took that advice. The guest house is amazing and so well equipped that we didn’t want for anything. Food can be hard to find on Teshima, but breakfast was covered with granola, yogurt, homemade strawberry jam, and excellent local bread. There was beer and wine in the fridge too. Alan, Reiko, and their staff were incredibly helpful and kind. They picked us up and arranged things for us. If you’re after a peaceful, relaxing place to stay, this is it. Highly recommended.
