Shodoshima Business Hotel Newport

The location is convenient, very close to Tonosho Port, and I appreciated the free bread in the morning. I knew it was a guesthouse and didn't expect hotel-style service. Still, the toilet smelled strongly of ammonia, and when I filled the tub, the odor was so bad I couldn't use it and had to switch rooms. It made me feel sick. The room also smelled of cigarettes, which I imagine would be difficult for non-smokers. At a minimum, smoking and non-smoking rooms should be separated, and the toilets need a more thorough cleaning.

I had breakfast included, though it was served across the street at Business Hotel Newport. At checkout we were given souvenirs, and the friendly service made this feel like a very homey guesthouse. The place is right by the Tonosho Port Ferry Terminal, with parking available; there's also a 7-Eleven within walking distance and souvenirs at the terminal. Rooms have air conditioning and a modular bath, but there's a shared fridge in the hallway. Wi-Fi is available, just don't count on it being very fast. You can also buy discounted tickets for the nearby Olive Onsen if you'd rather use the hot spring.

The room was clean, and the breakfast bread was really tasty 😊. But the cigarette smell was strong. If you're sensitive to smoke or traveling with small children, I'd avoid staying here.

We were given a souvenir when we left, a nice touch on top of the great service. The room was comfortable and relaxing, and the food was delicious. Dinner was at a nearby affiliated restaurant, where two main dishes cost just 1500 yen and came with unlimited refills. The place is right next to Tonosho Port, and the stay was inexpensive.
