The location worked out perfectly: a five-minute walk to the port and the bus stop for most of the island, plus a 7 Eleven just three minutes away. Miya-san brought us cold tea and water every day, so we didn’t need to carry drinks back. What made the stay special was Miya-san herself. She shared stories about her life on Shodoshima, which made us feel connected to the place. We arrived quite late on the first night, and she stayed up to welcome us. Her warmth meant a lot. The old building has a lot of family history in it, which gave it more character than an ordinary commercial hotel. There are a few trade-offs: only one shared bathroom for the whole building, so guests may have to wait at busy times. There may also be a bug or mosquito around because of the island’s lush nature, so bring mosquito spray. Four of us shared one tatami room. It just fit our futons, and Miya-san kindly lent us the neighboring storage room for the extra futons. We felt comfortable and well cared for. Thank you, Miya-san!

The tatami room had the feel of an old Japanese home, and the facilities were clean. The location is handy, very close to the port, with parking available. Our hostess was friendly and helpful, always making sure we were comfortable. She was also happy to share her stories and information about things to see on the island.

The room was large and comfortable, with a little fridge stocked with bottled water. The place was very clean, including the shared bathroom, which wasn’t a problem for us. They also supplied the basics like toothbrushes and towels. It’s in a handy spot near the port and bus stop, and there’s a 7-11 nearby too. The owner made us feel at home and was a huge help. She called a restaurant to check if there was still space, helped us figure out bus timetables, and pointed us toward some beautiful places most tourists don’t usually visit. We had a lovely stay at Kikuya ryokan. Thank you very much.

Miya was the best part of my stay. She took such good care of me and was incredibly warm and friendly. I had a spacious tatmi room. If I could, I’d give her 5+ stars. Highly recommend.

I was the only guest at Miyo-san, and got to experience such wonderful Japanese hospitality. They were so friendly and helpful that I felt right at home. I’d love to come back!
