We spent two nights here as Henro, and the highlight for us was sharing family dinners around the big table. The food was homemade and delicious, and the group had a warm, heart-centered community feel thanks to Mitsu, Tae, Mari, and Kazu. If connecting with people in an authentic, vulnerable way appeals to you, Kaiyu is a great choice. Community is priceless. The onsen water felt silky, and comes from 1km underground. We enjoyed it along with two dinners. The eco-conscious rooms were great, though this isn’t a place for anyone looking for super luxury. It has a retro, vintage feel in a renovated setting. Wishing everyone lots of love.

The family dinner was a real highlight, with lovely company, laughter, and incredible fresh food. Mitsu and his family have made Kaiyu such a warm, peaceful, welcoming place. I only wish I could have stayed longer, and hope I can come back soon. I had a wonderful rest day on my Henro pilgrimage and can’t recommend this unique eco lodge highly enough. The bright, comfortable room had amazing views of Oki Beach, just across the road, where the snorkelling is amazing. Thank you!

The homemade cooking was beautiful, and Marie’s ginger ale was a treat. I also loved the onsen and the beautiful surroundings. I stayed two nights as a Henro pilgrim, rented a bicycle to visit cape Ashizimi and temple 38, and wished I could have stayed longer. It felt more like renting an apartment that you could make your own if you wanted to. Thank you for the hospitality!

Kaiyu has its own kind of charm. The look is far from conventional, but it felt organic, authentic, and beautiful in its own way. It may not suit everyone, but if unusual places appeal to you, I think you’ll be happy you came. We stayed here during the Shikoku pilgrimage, right by the beach and conveniently placed between temples 37 and 38, with good public transport connections. Mitsu and his family are great hosts. There are beach activities like surfing and snorkeling, and we enjoyed the beautiful views, nice Onsen, and a healthy, delicious dinner that brought people together.

After 14 years, we came back to the region for a second visit and were happy to return to Kaiyu. We enjoyed sharing a meal with Mitsu and Tae. It’s quite a different sort of “home” experience, so don’t expect a regular hotel. The wood-heated onsen was lovely, and the area around Ashizuri Cape, Tosashimizu and Tatskushi is amazing.
