I chose Katsura (room 302), which is larger than the standard rooms, and the kaiseki dinner and breakfast were both very solid, with local ingredients including fish freshly caught from nearby Towada lake. This was the last stop of an eight-day search for classic autumn foliage across five ryokans in three prefectures of Northern Honshu. It was the most expensive of those ryokans, so I only stayed one night, but it was well worth it. The place isn’t the most luxurious and doesn’t have the best amenities. Still, “timeless” is the word that fits. The onsen is old but well maintained, and somehow ended up being the most memorable. Maybe the history of the place made the biggest impression. Highly recommended.

I visited the onsen during the day, and it was 1000yen per person. Inside, there’s lots of beautiful wood, and the water was hot but pleasant. After bathing, you can sit, relax, and have some water in the “relaxation room,” which has a lovely view of the trees outside.
The drive there is awesome 😎, and we absolutely loved our stay. The food was fantastic, the staff were lovely, and the onsens were beautiful. I can’t recommend this Ryokan highly enough.
You can book a shuttle from Shichinohe Towada station, but it needs to be reserved three days before check-in. The helpful staff made the whole trip easy, from boarding the van through check-in, and an English version of the ryokan guide is available. The ryokan is wonderfully peaceful, the onsen was excellent, and Tsutanuma is just a 15-minute walk away. Both the course dinner and buffet breakfast were amazing and made the most of local ingredients. Highly recommended if you want to relax, unwind, and enjoy a soak.
It costs 2000 yen for each entry. Unless you’re staying at the Ryokan or using the bathhouse, I’d drive farther down near the lake.
