We could see the beach from our room and the terrace, which was lovely. The hostel has a cool surfer feel, and it was clean and comfortable. The Japanese food was simple but really tasty, and both hosts speak very good English.
A nice place to stay.
The owners were nice.
On September 8, 2025, I ended up paying 5400 yen even though the entrance sign showed 4400. I hadn’t planned to stay here, but the lower price caught my eye, so I asked if there was a vacancy. They said yes, then charged me an extra 1000 yen. I checked the amount with them, and they still said 5400, even showing me the paper. I don’t know if the difference was because I’m a foreigner or because I hadn’t booked online. I looked tired, too. I learned to ask about the price as well as availability before agreeing to stay. Don’t get ripped off.
The woman who welcomed me was kind, and the seaside location was quiet. She gave me my room at 11 a.m., but that was my only real contact with anyone; service otherwise was minimal. The food was the worst part. The barbecue meal I paid full price for was nearly inedible, and the breakfast wasn’t any better: coffee I hadn’t asked for and two slices of sandwich bread soaked in what seemed like butter. If you don’t like butter, that’s a problem. Plain bread would have been better. I didn’t see anyone when I checked out, so I left the keys. South Shore is one to forget. Zero points.
