Ryokan Nisaburo

Five of us were served an incredible boat-shaped platter, with a different piece of sashimi for each person. We were blown away by how fresh it was, the fish’s bright, sparkling black eyes said it all. The dishes are only possible because they’re a fishing company. My family was so grateful for the hospitality. I’ve been coming to Yamagata for decades, but didn’t know this wonderful place existed. My relatives in the city said it was the best around here, and now I feel I’ve missed out by not finding it sooner. Everyone was so kind, I can hardly describe it. It’s the sort of place I want to keep secret instead of telling anyone. We look forward to your continued patronage.

The food was delicious, and the feast was so generous I couldn’t finish it. The price was reasonable too. But I’d chosen the place because I wanted to try their fixed net fishing, and even though I applied, I was really disappointed that I couldn’t do it. (;´d｀) The young woman at reception, who I think was the young proprietress, also seemed unfriendly. She didn’t thank us or properly smile, which was disappointing.

The best part of this inn is the food. The sashimi comes on a boat platter, and there was more than I could finish. I was surprised it was included in the room rate at such a reasonable price. The building has a Showa-era feel, but the rooms have been renovated and kept clean. The common spaces aren’t air-conditioned in summer, so they can get hot.

I really don’t understand the high ratings people have given this place. The sashimi from a supermarket pack, even whole fish, was fresher. The room facing the Sea of Japan had a good view, but the TV didn’t get BS channels. The toilet paper was as rough and stiff as newspaper, which is unusual for a lodging these days. Still, the squid sashimi at breakfast was fresh and tasty, and breakfast was a generous portion. I’m grateful for the kind service from the woman who showed me to breakfast.
