Renting e-bikes was a real highlight. We rode around Hitakatsu township, nearby villages, and out to Narutaki Falls, which made for a fantastic adventure. We stayed in the ground-floor double room, which was spacious, clean, and cozy, and the electric blankets were a lovely bonus. It was a great Japanese homestay, run by a friendly couple. They were very accommodating and shared lots of information about the area in English.

Breakfast is a must. The owner makes it themselves, including homemade yogurt. We paid 800yen per person, and it was totally worth it. Tea and coffee are free, the water is filtered and yummy, and there’s air conditioning in the room. You can leave your luggage after the ferry arrives, and there are current adaptors in the rooms. It’s a house set up for guests, so feel free to use the bathrooms and kitchen. There’s a tap in the bathroom. The owner is only there when you arrive, so ask all your questions then. You can rent electric bikes, and you’re going to need them. They make life easier. Ask the host to book dinner at the restaurant too. We couldn’t get in because quite a few people were interested. The beds were hard, which was new for us Europeans. The toilets were clean and had foam inside.

The house was clean and easy to find, and the host was really kind and shared lots of information about the area. In the morning, he made a traditional Japanese breakfast. It was really good!
