While sightseeing in Uji, I was able to drop off my luggage and check in straight away, even though it wasn’t morning check-in time. I’d called to ask, and they kindly said yes. I had the Japanese-style room to myself, which was relaxing, and was glad to find two mattresses. Pillowcases and sheets were provided for me to put on myself. I wasn’t sure where the blankets were or whether they’re changed, but decided to trust that they are. There were hand towels in the bathroom and toilet, but sharing them with strangers felt a bit uncomfortable, so I used my own. I think it would be more hygienic to remove them or provide paper towels. The lounge had a water dispenser, but it was empty. I couldn’t tell if it gets refilled, and since it seemed nobody was there at night, I didn’t use it. The room information sheet said there was no laundry facility and suggested a nearby coin laundry. Google Maps took me to one that was closed, and the other places were quite far away. Since I still had summer travel ahead, not being able to wash clothes was a problem. The shower sign said “Occupied,” but the door wouldn’t open, so I ended up rattling it. It seemed to be in use. Maybe the previous guest didn’t know about the sign, or perhaps it was only in Japanese and a foreign guest couldn’t understand it. I hope the instructions can be made clearer. There’s air conditioning, motion-sensor security cameras and Wi-Fi. The location and price are good.

The owner was friendly, and the bedding was warm and comfortable, so I got a good rest. There’s a coin-operated washer and dryer, and it’s easy to get to Byodoin, making this a good base for a Uji trip. There are lots of stairs, so take care going up.
