Guest House Kukuru

Apart from the good location, I can't recommend this hostel. The reception only opens at 4 p.m., so arriving earlier means nobody is there and you can't get in. Calls go unanswered too. You also can't leave luggage before check-in or after checkout, which is very inconvenient and could disrupt travel plans. The front desk staff were impatient, and when I spoke English, they told me to speak Japanese. I'm on my last night after more than ten days traveling in Japan, and this has been the worst hostel I've stayed at. The service was by far the worst I've experienced in Japan.

The location and amenities are good for the price, and the staff were very kind. There were Google translated instructions in many languages for guests who don't speak Japanese. Everything was very clean, and the lounge had useful basics like a fridge, hot water kettle, and TV. I liked the Japanese floral wallpaper theme. The mattress was quite hard and I could feel the springs, so a topper might help. A small trashcan in the ladies' shower would be nice. Thanks for a lovely stay!

What I liked most about Kukuru was how easy it made getting around Wakayama. It’s right by Wakayama Station, with restaurants and convenience stores close by, and the price felt very reasonable for that location. After a day out, the place was quiet enough to get a good night’s sleep. The capsules were clean, modern, and roomier than I expected, with a thoughtful sense of privacy even in a shared space. Bathrooms and common areas were spotless, and the staff were friendly and helpful. It’s a comfortable, peaceful base for solo travelers or anyone on a tight schedule. I’d happily stay at Kukuru again.

It’s a clean, quiet place near the station, and the air conditioning works well. I could adjust the airflow in my capsule to get the temperature where I wanted it. The toilets and showers were clean and had what I needed. There’s a teapot, but I couldn’t find any tea or cups. The general standard is good enough to stay for as long as needed. A couple of things left me less satisfied. The hairdryer is extremely weak, and with hair longer than shoulder-blade length, drying it took 30-40 minutes. Also, the receptionist showed me to my room but didn’t explain where the other facilities were. It’s a small hostel and easy enough to figure out, but for the price I expected a bit more hospitality.
