Minsyuku Atsuan

The house is small, clean, and cozy, and Atsuko-san and Tetsuji-san are such a sweet couple. Atsuko-san’s cooking was delicious, but her portions were so generous I couldn’t finish dinner and barely had room for breakfast. I felt bad leaving food because it was so tasty. Wazuka village was gorgeous, quiet, and peaceful even during Golden Week. I also had the pleasure of meeting a very friendly Japanese couple while I was there. If you’re visiting the area, I highly recommend staying with Atsuko-san and Tetsuji-san for at least one night.

The hosts went out of their way to help me when I had trouble with my rental car, and the dinner was better than restaurant food. They’re really good cooks, and they were incredibly kind throughout my stay. My room was beautiful, with a view over the tea fields, and the guesthouse sits right among them. I only spent one night here and wish I’d had longer, especially to try pottery with them. This is the most incredible guesthouse I’ve ever stayed in. If you visit Wazuka, you have to stay here.

We took a pottery class and learned about Kyoto-style ceramics, and our hosts were happy to introduce us to local friends in the Wazuka community. There’s also karaoke, and you can buy sake or beer if you fancy. The food was cooked with heart and was better than restaurant standard, with the matriarch plating every dish thoughtfully. Tetsu-san and Atsuko-san were gracious, entertaining hosts who went out of their way to make the stay memorable. Their beautiful home was lovely to sleep in and wake up to each morning. The vivacious elderly couple have made this peaceful oasis one of my best experiences in Japan so far. I’d happily recommend it to visitors before this quiet town fills up with tourists.
