Getting here can be difficult without a car, but we rented one, so it wasn’t an issue. We stayed as two people in the bungalow, with ocean and sunrise views from the veranda. The family running the place were lovely and spoke English. Breakfast cost ¥800 per person and came with fish, egg, salad, rice, and other things. It was tasty, and Yakushima tea was included. There’s also a common area open 24/7 where you can buy frozen food, ice cream, and drinks, which is handy when nothing else is open or you just feel like staying in. Yakushima is rural, so there are naturally more insects and spiders, mostly outside. We didn’t see them in our bungalow. It was a wonderful stay nonetheless!

We were so glad to return from our adventures to a warm cabin with a lovely cedar scent. We stayed in the private ocean-view cabin in April 2025. It was exceptionally clean and the cedarwood kept the indoor temperature comfortable through the day. The space felt private and relaxed, and all the facilities were convenient and clean. The ocean and mountain views were outstanding. The hosts were honestly the best we had during our holiday in Japan.

We spent five days here in a bungalow, a beautifully designed cabin closer to the sea than the other types. A terrible thunderstorm hit on our first night, with what I think was hail at one point, but the cabin held up fine. There were lots of insects outside that night, but the netting kept them out. The cross-ventilation was excellent and storage space very efficient. A jingle plays at 6am, though some days I slept so well I missed it completely. Kako-san (?) was helpful with the area and recommendations. We didn’t get to meet Kentaro-san in person, but when we got stranded at Yakisugi Land, he helped us contact the rental car company and saved us. The area is quieter and a drive from the main attractions, but Onoida has plenty of amenities and things to see. It’s also closer to the animal road. I’d absolutely return to Yakushima and this was one of the best places I’ve ever stayed.

This family-run hotel was a gem during our trip to Japan. From check-in, the staff went out of their way to make us comfortable and help make the visit memorable. The rooms were clean, cozy, and beautiful. What stood out most was the warm way the people running the place treated us, more like friends than guests. We’re already looking forward to staying again and would recommend it to anyone wanting a genuine, welcoming experience in Japan.

Ken San, we love you! Thanks so much for the warm welcome. Ken San answered all our questions about travel, the stay, tickets, food, rentals, everything. The room was cozy and comfortable, and the bathroom was clean. Bring bug repellent if bugs aren’t your thing. The common area has kitchenware you can borrow and laundry. Ken has trekking gear for sale in case you forgot something. We’d been looking around the island for a gas lamp for coffee and ended up finding one in Ken Sam’s storeroom, lol. We even borrowed his bicycle. The view is absolutely breathtaking. You can reserve breakfast, dinner, and bento a day ahead, and the food was delicious and filling.
