The breakfast was Western-style, with eggs, sausage, bacon, yogurt, and toast, and the staff were friendly and spoke fluent English during our two-night stay. But the shared bathroom setup became a real problem after skiing. The public bath was meant to close at 10 PM, yet when I went down at 9:25 PM, the women's bath was locked. Someone inside said it was full, which left me confused about how a public bath could be both full and locked before closing. The front desk didn't help. They said the bath wasn't supposed to be locked, but wouldn't assist either. Then a man came out of the women's bath and said I could use it. I asked if it was mixed, and he said it was a women's bath, explaining that he'd locked the door because he and his partner were a couple. I was shocked and felt unsafe knowing anyone might walk in while I was showering. I hadn't realized guests could lock the door to keep others out. After visiting many public baths in Japan, I'd never encountered anything like this, and the staff were no help with it.

We only ate here, and the food was awesome. The homemade cookies were lovely, and the staff were amazing, especially our French server Annie.

The location made everything easy: restaurants, the public onsen, the slopes and rental shop, and the bus terminal were all within a 10-minute walk. Our room was huge, bathroom included, and had everything we needed. The lodge was warm and cozy, and we loved meeting Yuki, the gentle dog-bear. The staff spoke excellent English and helped us book ski passes, so things went smoothly. The host was so kind that they even showed us around the slopes, helping us stay safe and enjoy beautiful Zao mountain.

Mao's parents opened the family-run lodge 53 years ago, and Mao knows so much about Zao's history. She was lovely, and Garbie brings a lot of personality, warmth, and life to the place. Their hospitality was some of the best we had anywhere in Japan, and the staff were incredibly accommodating. The food at the restaurant was delicious and really well priced. That smash burger was *chef's kiss*. The lodge has a cozy, homelike feel and was a real highlight of our trip. Love from Australia. 🇦🇺

We keep coming back to ski in Zao because the snow is good and it's less crowded than Hokkaido Niseko. It's also easy to get there from Tokyo: we usually take the bullet train from Tokyo Station, then a taxi from Uenoyama onsen. Lodge Scole has just marked its 53rd anniversary. Mao now runs the family lodge her parents started, and she can offer recommendations for Zao based on what you're looking for. It's a lovely small family-owned place with great hospitality and easy access to the slopes. The meals are really good too, with a proper breakfast and three-course dinner. The wine and sake selection is great, and after dinner you can sit by the fireplace and meet other guests. Skiing in Zao is fantastic.
