The pork shabu-shabu was delicious, and the room and bath both had a stunning view over Matsumoto Plain, by day and at night. I’d go back just to see that view again. The front desk man was friendly, though the restaurant staff felt polite in a somewhat mechanical, one-way way, and I wished they’d been warmer. My room had a strong disinfectant-like smell, almost like a hospital or nursing home. Maybe it was just that room, but it was overpowering, and some incense would have made it feel more comfortable. It was a shame with such a lovely view. The underground parking area was also dark and a little ominous. The hotel is tucked deep in the mountains, appearing suddenly along the forest road.

I had a pleasant bath here, thanks in part to the very kind facility staff. It’s a mountain location in Yamagata Village, with both day-use hot springs and overnight stays. The day-use area has an indoor bath and sauna, body soap and shampoo, plus free lockers with keys. The view through the glass walls is amazing. It would be helpful if the sauna also had a clock and thermometer, though some of the baths are inexpensive.

The local souvenirs were reasonably priced, which was a nice surprise and meant I could shop without changing my plans for the day. On the way back, we saw what looked like a parent and child, or perhaps a pair, of monkeys on the slope. It made for a cool, refreshing summer break. We’d used the day-trip hot springs several times, but this was our first overnight stay, during Obon. The room was very clean and had a bathroom, toilet, sink, and amenities, so we could relax. We had dinner barbecue made with local ingredients, and the vegetables were especially delicious. There was more than the two of us could finish. We went to the baths in the evening and again in the morning. They were open until 9am, with the men’s and women’s baths alternating. From the balcony there should have been a view, but it was too foggy to see the 🌠. Still, the air felt like it filled my whole body. Being surrounded by nature is such a luxury. The mountain road was dim and scary when we arrived late in the evening. It might be safer to get there while it’s still light.

The bath has such a soothing view over Matsumoto Plain, it’s hard to put into words. The place is kept very well, and even babies who are crawling can bathe safely. I’m so sad it’s closing. KiyShimizu-so, thank you. You’ll always be in my heart.
