Comfort Hotel Shin Yamaguchi

The room was okay, though a bit small, as is common in Japan. Breakfast was fine, but could use more vegetarian choices. The location worked well for buses to Hagi and local trains to Yamaguchi, as well as the Shinkansen lines.

All the staff were nice, and breakfast was included, though the small spread suited the price and it seemed odd that there was no natto. Shin Yamaguchi Station is convenient to reach, but there's less around the hotel than near Yamaguchi Station. I didn't expect much from an affordable hotel, but the room felt cramped because there was no storage under the bed. The climate control had only one mode, set to AC, which was fine during the day but made the room cold at night. The window was the bigger problem: it seemed unsealed, letting in a cold draft all night. I asked for a blanket, but the second night was worse, with it 43 F outside. I could faintly but clearly hear people talking outdoors, almost as if there were no window, and sometimes smelled food from nearby izakayas. Opening and closing the window didn't help. It made for a very uncomfortable night.

I was especially looking forward to breakfast, and the simple daily spread was nice, with a few changes like different bread or smoothies. The smoothies were great. Staff were nice, and they let me leave my luggage before check-in. The hotel is very close to shin yamaguchi station and 7-11, but I didn't really like the restaurant options nearby and often had trouble deciding what to get for dinner. There was no bottled water in the room. The TV was rather small but had a good selection of channels, and the pillows felt too flat for me. They use modern card keys, but only gave me one.

The location is good, just a minute from Shin-Yamaguchi station's north exit. Still, I wouldn't recommend it to female guests because we have to bring all our own amenities, especially a shower cap and cotton pads. I bought some at a nearby 7-11 and think I'll try another hotel with those supplies next time.
