The onsen downstairs was clean, hot and soothing after a long day of falling while I learned to snowboard. I rarely saw more than two other people there. The hotel is just a few doors from one of the slopes, about a three-minute walk, so it's easy to get started. Our room for me and my partner was spacious, warm and quiet. At the front was a small area with a sink and bathroom, and our room also had a shower and tub. Beyond that was the main futon area, then a little seating space by a window looking toward the hotel across the street and the slopes behind it. There was a TV we didn't use and the usual tea setup. We arrived by bus from Nagano just after 6 pm, and dinner was ready for us. Both meals were in a large dining room. Breakfast kept me going until lunch, and dinner was plentiful after a day on the slopes. The food was varied and tasty, and dinner came with a cute printed menu explaining what was served. The service was amazing. My Japanese is terrible, but most employees could help me in English. One younger guy at reception was especially helpful, welcoming us and sorting out the bus back down. For the price, it's a great deal. I just finished my stay and am heading down the mountain, already thinking that if I return to Shiga Kogen, I'll stay here again.

Yong San deserves a special mention. He's always smiling, incredibly helpful, and seems to know the hotel and surrounding area inside out. He's a real gem, and the hotel is lucky to have him. The restaurant food was wonderful and delicious, and the hospitality throughout matched the high standard I expect in Japan. The owner seems to have built a warm culture, because everyone we met was friendly and helpful. I'd stay here again on a return to Shiga Kogen, and recommend it to friends and family.

The standout for me was Young, a Korean employee who was extremely friendly and helpful. When he found out my car only had normal tyres, he was kind and understanding. He helped me buy tyre snow covers at a homeware store and choose a budget-friendly option, so I could drive to and from the mountaintop more safely and easily. He also shared advice and updates when a disruptive snowstorm hit Japan during my stay. His kindness made the visit worthwhile. Thank you so much, Mr. Young!! My room was big enough as a solo traveler. I didn't have a private shower, but the public bath was always clean and never too crowded when I used it. Breakfast was warm and a satisfying portion. I heard some rooms are due to get private showers in renovations next year, so I might return for a ski trip. The hotel also wasn't as crowded as some others I saw. In winter, though, the mountaintop location isn't a great base for exploring nearby cities, and the roads up and down can be icy or snowy. Be careful, and only drive up if you're skilled and have a strong car.

Hotel Sanraku has a bit of a retro feel, with ‘90s-style decor that makes it seem like a distinctive place rather than a generic hotel. My spacious, comfortable room was clean, and the staff were consistently friendly. I booked without meals, but ate at the hotel restaurant and really liked the food, especially the oden set. I had a great stay and would recommend Hotel Sanraku to anyone planning a trip to Shigakougen.

The food and staff are what I'll miss most. Breakfast and dinner were delicious, so I only had to find lunch elsewhere, and the staff were helpful, even showing me how to lock my snowboard. My room was spacious, and there's an indoor onsen in the basement. Hotel sanraku is a 3-5 minute walk from family ichinose ski area and the ski lifts. I really enjoyed my stay.
