Minshuku Miyama

It took me a few days to put my thoughts together, but this is a real local ryokan close to Snow Monkey Park. The hosts treated us warmly, and I loved the homely dinner and breakfast. They also offer a shuttle to the start of the monkey hike. The sweet older woman who cooked our meals was especially wonderful. I’d absolutely recommend staying here.

The location worked really well for us: the bus stop across the road goes to the train station or ski resorts, and the monkey park trail starts a 10 to 15 minute walk away. There aren’t any convenience stores nearby, so plan your meals. My wife and I came in winter, when the snow made the place look even better, and we’d definitely return. It’s a humble ryokan, not five-star accommodation, but it was more than enough for us. The rooms and atmosphere felt authentic, and the elderly Japanese couple running it did their best to help despite the language barrier. The private onsen was top notch.

The owners’ kindness really stood out. They kept our luggage early in the morning and even drove us to the train station. The rooms were cozy, with an incredible view from the hallway, and sharing the bathroom worked out perfectly for us. We also loved the large, warm onsen at the end of the day and the delicious food. For comfort, location, and affordability, I couldn’t recommend this place more. We were blown away by the couple’s welcome and would come back.
