Hotel Terrace Yokohama

The room felt really run down. The tatami door paper was peeling, the shower racks sounded like they might give way, and the toilet flush handle felt ready to fall off. There was mold on the shower door too.

Breakfast was a highlight, especially chatting with Shea. She was so friendly, and you could tell she worked really hard. The food was good and fairly priced, and the staff were excellent. I loved my stay at Hotel Terrace.

The private bath was free to reserve, and the cleaning staff were such a nice surprise. One man from Morocco was especially friendly and helpful. Breakfast was perfectly adequate, nothing special, but fine. It was easy to find and only one station from Yokohama. For the price, I couldn't have asked for more. Highly recommend.

The staff are trying hard, and there are some nice touches, like ochazuke nights, manga to read, and a choice of pillows. At about $35 a night, it's the cheapest place I've stayed in Japan apart from capsule hotels, which usually run $15-40. Having your own room for that price beats a fancy capsule where you hear everyone snoring and moving around. Still, this was one of my worst hotel stays, and I'd look at other places even if they cost a little more. The building needs a fresh remodel. The elevator sounded like it might break or fall, the lamp cable ripped off when I tried it, and there was black dye or mold on both curtains. The sink had cracks, I had to turn the faucet several times to get full pressure, and the sheets had holes. The internet was slow, so I used my pocket WiFi. I also heard neighbors arguing or snoring every night. Getting to the livelier parts of sakuragicho takes a 5-10 minute walk, though the nearest combini is only 1-2 minutes away. The location isn't especially convenient.
