Hotel New Grand

The room was lovely, the bed was very comfortable, and I had a view of the tower. The concierge and bellhops were kind and thorough. Food and drink were the weak spot for me, especially for the price. Breakfast was awful and limited to set menus. The cheese and bacon sandwich was loaded with sugar, so I tried the omelet instead, but needed the manager’s approval to order a second meal. It was basically a shell filled with raw eggs. Their “famous” Doria, some kind of fish stew, was just so-so.

The room had a beautiful view and a calm atmosphere where I could relax all afternoon. I was also grateful for the room arrangement, which made my first visit to Yokohama feel special. Staff were warm and professional from the moment I arrived, and the room introduction was careful and thorough. Though the property is historic, its service and overall quality are still excellent. Chinatown and Yamashita Park are an easy walk away, and I’d happily stay here again next time.

You can walk along a lovely stretch of waterfront from this hotel, and Chinatown is just around the corner. Our view was excellent, and the room coffee maker made better-than-average coffee. The building looks a little worn, which isn’t surprising given its age. Staff were decent, though they didn’t stand out compared with other hotels we stayed at in Japan. The TV is tiny by modern standards, though I don’t spend much time watching TV in a room. Breakfast isn’t included.

The place feels very old. The furniture, phone, bathrooms, carpets, and just about everything seemed over a decade old, and it lacks services I’d expect at most hotels. They were out of rooms, so we took a smoking room, but the air in the room and hallways smelled so bad it felt like it needed firefighters and fire extinguishers. The windows were locked shut, and when we asked to open one because of the smoke, staff said it couldn’t be opened. The whole room felt full of secondhand smoke. They don’t provide lotion, and breakfast tasted really bad too. At checkout we waited 20 minutes for the elevator. The hotel was packed with weddings and meetings. This place needs a serious wake-up call; calling it a four-star hotel is wild, and I’d rate it three stars.
