We stayed for one night, and the private onsen beside our room was fantastic. The staff were really, really nice, though they spoke only a little English. Don't expect too much from the meals they provide.

I had the whole onsen to myself for an hour. It was quiet and peaceful, and the bath was clean, well maintained, and equipped. But the men's onsen water was lukewarm, with no steam or heat, and there were lots of dead insects floating in it.

The private bath cost ¥2600, and the onsen itself was just the right temperature for me. The shower setup wasn't great, though. The tap water felt pretty lukewarm, there were only two shower heads for me and my friends to share, and they looked quite old.

The people here were friendly, and I think this is the best-value ryokan around. Kirin lake is only a few minutes away on foot. Our room was clean, and from the outdoor onsen we could see the stars at night. Dinner is delivered to your room, while breakfast is made in-house. There are vending machines for milk and drinks. Just know you're not paying for full service: you make your own bed and set up your own dinner.

At Nurukawa Onsen Oyado Nurukawa Onsen, you can choose the public bath, an indoor or outdoor family bath, or the men's or women's bath. The water is very hot, so it takes a while to pour it over yourself and get used to the temperature. After bathing, though, it feels really good. Bring your own towels or rent them there. They accept credit cards; the family baths cost 2000 yen indoors and 2600 yen outdoors.
