It got pretty cold at night, which was my one small complaint. They provided a heater, but I kept switching it on and off because I’d get too hot, then cold again once it was off. That didn’t spoil the stay, though. Gettouan gave us the best dining and stay I’ve had here, based on my own experience. I know there are mixed and negative reviews, but the service we received was warm, attentive, and thoughtful from beginning to end. The staff made us feel welcome and looked after. The food was outstanding, with every course beautifully prepared, balanced, and full of depth. It felt like a whole experience, not just a meal. This was one of the best Japanese dinners I’ve had, and one of my best service experiences in Japan. I’d absolutely recommend Gettouan.

The rotenburo in my room was a lovely way to soak after a day walking around the peaceful town. The tatami and kakefuton were wonderful to sleep on, and I wish more Americans slept that way. I stayed at this stunning ryokan in 2013, when I was a Sailor in the military, and Yufuin’s tranquil town was a sight to behold. I tried fugu there and had many delicious meals. I hope I can return someday. It was truly a magical experience.

One of the best hotel stays I’ve had. The staff were warm and attentive, the meal was great, and the onsen was open to enjoy all night. If you want a proper ryokan and onsen experience, this place really delivers.

We came for a short onsen break as a couple, and the private bath made the stay especially peaceful and relaxing. Just note that breakfast isn’t automatically included, despite what Google says. You can choose a plan with breakfast and dinner. There’s a little town with plenty of restaurants, though getting there is easier by car since it’s a 40-minute walk. A lovely option for a romantic getaway.

Make sure to book dinner if you stay here. The Kaiseki was delicious and featured lots of local ingredients. We came to Yufu, about two hours from Fukuoka by bus, and found the ryokan’s atmosphere lovely from the moment we arrived. The staff were friendly, and the natural hot spring in our private onsen felt refreshing even in summer.
