The ryokan is close to the lake, so it was quick to get there early in the morning, though there’s hardly any lighting. The area is quiet and away from the Main Street, but still very close. I stayed two nights and tried all four onsens. If you’d rather skip them, you can shower in your room. I also had all my meals in my room, which made everything easy.

There are four onsens to choose from, as well as a private one in the room, and the futons were comfortable. The food was excellent in both quality and variety. With only 11 rooms, the place feels well looked after, and Mariko was especially attentive, always answering our questions with a smile. The location is right among the popular tourist streets. I’d definitely return to Yufuin.

Staying at yufuin santoukan felt divine ✨️ Mr. Gurung looked after us with so much care and love, and was professional too. The other staff were kind and humble. I’d definitely go back. Arigato 🙏

The food was amazing and the service exceptional. It was a bit of a hike from the bus stop, but they offered a shuttle. There are staff who speak English.

We really enjoyed staying at Santoukan. The staff were friendly, the rooms were great, and the food was excellent. I’ve stayed at plenty of ryokans in Japan, and I’d put Santoukan’s food in my top three. It wasn’t just high quality ingredients for shabu-shabu. Every dish was prepared perfectly, and dinner and breakfast were the highlights of our trip. We’ll come back when we visit yufuin again.
