The private open-air bath on our patio was the best part for me. Looking out at nature and listening to the birds while soaking was peaceful and grounding. The meals were generous, beautifully prepared and presented, and the staff put real effort into making the vegetarian options feel just as thoughtful and special as the regular menu. The rooms at Ashikari are spotless, lovely, and carefully set up with just about everything you could need, from vanity kits, a blow dryer and straightener, yoga mat, good toiletries and lots of teas to a coffee pod machine. They also provide bathrobes, yukata, and pajamas, which made it easy to settle in. The hallways feel a little dated. Service was warm and attentive throughout our stay. Ashikari in Yugawara was a wonderful place to rest and reset, and a memorable, restorative escape for anyone wanting a quiet break surrounded by nature. I’d highly recommend it.

The staff made us feel very welcome, and the service was outstanding. We had excellent food, and the large onsen facilities were beautifully maintained. The rooms were spacious, comfortable, and relaxing. It’s an amazing onsen in a really unique, peaceful setting. Highly recommended for a relaxing break.

A beautiful room and an exceptional hotel. It’s very accessible and friendly for babies and children, and worked perfectly for a one-night hot spring break from Tokyo.

The food was really good, and the service was thoughtful and efficient. Our clean, bright room felt comfortable, and the private bath on the patio was clean, scenic, and roomy enough for two. The shuttle was convenient and on time. I’d come again :)

I don’t know whether we were seated in the check-in area because we were foreigners or had children, but every other Japanese guest, or guests without children, ate in the dining area. I complained about this at dinner and a staff member apologized and gave us two glasses of wine, but the next morning our family was again the only group having breakfast in the check-in area. Breakfast ran longer than dinner, and we could see plenty of open tables in the dining room. While we ate, people nearby were reading newspapers and making coffee, even though there were curtains. This isn’t what I expect from a luxury hot spring ryokan. I strongly advise foreigners and families with children not to come.
